JOHANNESBURG - In recognition of his substantial contribution to South Africa’s business landscape over many decades, Kaizer Chiefs Executive Chairman, Dr. Kaizer Motaung, was bestowed with a second honorary doctorate on Tuesday, this time by Wits University’s Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. Motaung, a successful businessperson, soccer administrator and philanthropist, delivered a speech that struck a chord with graduates from the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. He delivered his address after Wits University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Commerce on 15 July at the Wits Great Hall. SARS extends due date for filing EMP201

SANDTON - South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner, Edward Kieswetter, has extended the due date for EMP201 filing and payment to 14 July 2025. EMP201 is a tax return that is submitted by an employer to SARS on a monthly basis. The extension was granted following the higher than expected volumes that were experienced on Monday which caused SARS systems to take longer to respond than expected.  “We recognise that some employers experienced delays in submitting their monthly EMP201’s and as a result we will consider not imposing penalties and interest in relation to employers who would otherwise have been compliant. “This process of payment is governed by paragraphs 2(1) and 14(2) of the Fourth Schedule to the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962, which provides for the payment of Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and Skills Development Levy (SDL), and the submission of the EMP201 form within a period of seven days after the end of the month during w...

Gauteng government to pay R3.3 billion second e-tolls debt instalment

GAUTENG - The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is expected to pay some R3.3 billion to service the outstanding e-tolls debt. This was announced by Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Lebogang Maile, during a media briefing on Sunday. E-tolls were scrapped last year following years of discontent from road users in an agreement between the provincial government and National Treasury. The GPG committed to paying some 30% of the historic debt. “... The Gauteng Provincial Government will honour the province’s obligation by paying the second instalment towards the e-tolls debt, as disclosed in the 2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework.  “The amount due… based on the Memorandum of Agreement, is R3.3 billion in terms of the historic debt. Property owners encouraged to apply for RATES REBATES as expiry date looms

GERMISTON  - The City of Ekurhuleni calls property owners who qualify for rates exemption or rebates to apply as the current exemptions and rebates will expire with the current evaluation roll on 30 June 2025. In terms of the city’s Property Rates Policy, the exemptions and rebates lapse with the expiry of the validity period of the valuation roll. This then means even those who currently qualify will be required to re-apply. Gauteng targets R300 billion in investments to boost economy

GBV case against businessman Edwin Sodi struck off the roll

RANDBURG - The Randburg Magistrates’ Court has struck the assault and attempted murder case against Edwin Sodi from the roll. Sodi was charged in connection with an alleged incident involving domestic violence in March 2022. The State expressed readiness to proceed with the trial, stating that it rejected the complainant’s withdrawal statement due to the widespread scourge of Gender-Based Violence in the country.  The court took into consideration that both complainants were absent in court and that one of them had filed a withdrawal statement. The second complainant indicated that he no longer wished to proceed with the case, subsequently the defence argued that the case be struck off the roll, which was granted by the court.  The NPA remains committed to supporting victims of GBV and will continue in its efforts to combat this scourge.

KZNCOGTA MEC initiates Forensic Investigations into three Municipalities

DURBAN – The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has authorised Section 106 forensic investigations into the Msunduzi, KwaDukuza, and Nongoma Municipalities. This action is mandated by Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act, which stipulates that the MEC is obliged to conduct an investigation upon receipt of allegations pertaining to maladministration, fraud, and corruption within a municipality. The investigations will specifically address allegations concerning: Abuse of municipal assets; Elevated levels of political instability; * Political interference in procurement processes; * Deficiencies in consequence management; * Contraventions of Supply Chain Management (SCM) regulations; * Irregularities in recruitment procedures; * Instances of maladministration, fraud, and corruption.
