JUST IN: Truck crash and diesel spillage cause total road closure of N1

JOHANNESURG - Following the earlier motor vehicle accident involving two trucks on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmedt that all lanes of the N1 South are closed to traffic. According to JMPD, this closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene and clear the diesel spillage and overturned vehicle. "Three slight injuries have been reported, and one of the trucks has overturned, spilling diesel. Emergency personnel and Law Enforcement are on scene, and initially, three lanes were affected and closed off, causing heavy delays. "All lanes of the N1 South are currently closed before Maraisburg Road. Vehicles are being diverted at Gordon Road. Significant and heavy traffic congestion is being experienced on the N1 South and surrounding areas," said JMPD. Five men to appear in court for public violence following Loftus protest

PRETORIA - The police have arrested five men following a protest at the Loftus stadium in Hatfield, Tshwane district. The suspects will be facing charges which include public violence, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property. On Sunday, 11 May 2025 just after 16:30 during a soccer match halftime, a group of about 150 people started protesting. Members from Public Order Police approached the protesters to try to talk to them but they allegedly turned violent, started hurling objects at the police. The police managed to stabilise the protesters and arrested five men. The police have a responsibility to act when a protest becomes disruptive, interferes with the event or endangers other people as per the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act 2 of 2010. Mother's Day tragedy: Tow truck collision ends nine lives

EMPANGENI - A tow truck rear-ended a bakkie, resulting in nine people perishing in a horrific accident in Empangeni, north of KwaZulu-Natal this morning (Mother's Day). Public Statement by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma reads: On this Mother’s Day, early this morning around 06h47, I received a report from our highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate informing me about a horrific accident that claimed the lives of nine people, mostly mothers. Losing a mother is a deeply painful experience that marks the radical change of the family’s life and involves a wide range of sad emotions. According to a preliminary report, this accident, which happened along the N2 Northbound after Mthunzini Toll Plaza, involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 which was transporting 24 members of the Zion Christian Church.  They were travelling to Dukuduku, Umtubatuba.

Suspect detained for illegally selling Nedbank Cup Final tickets meant for sponsors

DURBAN - One suspect has been detained after he was found selling Nedbank Cup Final 2025 match day tickets before kickoff at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the illegally sold tickets were issued to sponsors. He was also found in possession of wristbands which were meant to be distributed to service providers. The SAPS said the detained suspect will be processed accordingly. This is a developing story.

DURBAN - EThekwini Municipality City Manager, Musa Mbhele, confirmed that all security measures are firmly in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all when Kaizer Chiefs clash Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final this afternoon. Excitement is building up across the Moses Mabhida Stadium precinct; however, strict warnings have been issued: no ticket, no entry.  "The public is urged to stay away from the stadium if they do not have valid tickets. Those found with counterfeit tickets will face legal action," Mbhele warned. "For fans without tickets, fan parks with big screens and entertainment will be set up at Durban’s Battery Beach and Albert Park to enjoy the match safely. Durban is ready and set for a spectacular final," he concluded. The Nedbank Cup kickoff is at 15h30.

Eleven suspects intercepted for illegal mining in Gauteng

KINSGWAY - The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit Officers in conjunction with EMPD K9 Unit Officers, arrested 11 undocumented foreign nationals males between the ages of twenty (20) and fifty(50) years old, for illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act in the Kingsway area on Tuesday, 7 May.   According to EMPD, Officers carried out a sting operation as part to help curb the high number of illegal mining activities in the City of Ekurhuleni. EMPD officers face pre-dismissal processes after illegal strike

GERMISTON - The City of Ekurhuleni has commenced disciplinary measures against 389 Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers following their participation in an illegal strike and blockade of critical highways on 19 March 2025. The affected EMPD officers face pre-dismissal processes due to severe misconduct, including the illegal blockade of the R21, N12, N17, and N3 highways.  According to the City, this unlawful action significantly disrupted traffic flow, severely inconvenienced thousands of commuters, and hindered access to the O.R. Tambo International Airport, a designated National Key Point, impacting flight schedules and broader regional connectivity. "As EMPD officers, these individuals are classified under essential services, mandated to uphold public safety and order. GAUTENG - A suspect reportedly lost their leg after a botched cash-in-transit heist on the East Rand. It is reported that the suspect bombed himself, while attempting to blast the cash truck in Thokoza Park in the wee hours of Tuesday, 6 May. It's reported that the suspect succumbed to his injuries while his accomplices vanished after the incident. An official statement is yet to be released by the SAPS or Cash Solutions company involved. Four arrested in connection with missing journalist and partner

PRETORIA - The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola has welcomed a breakthrough in the case of missing journalist, Aserie Ndlovu and his partner. On Sunday, 04 May 2025, a cross province operation involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga police led by the Deputy National Commissioner of Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya and the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph MKhwanazi led to the questioning and subsequent arrests of these suspects. The first suspect who is arrested, is according to investigations, the last to be in the company of the missing couple. The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be that of the missing journalist. One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized. Inquest docket opened after head-on collision claims 15 lives

EASTERN CAPE - An inquest docket has been opened following the deaths of 15 people in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bakkie, the Eastern Cape Transport Department said on Sunday. “A total of 15 people have died and five others sustained injuries in a head-on collision involving a fully loaded minibus taxi and a bakkie. The accident occurred on the R63 road between Adelaide and Maqoma (Fort Beaufort) at about midnight on Saturday,” said the department in a social media post on Facebook. It is alleged that the white Quantum, travelling from Qonce (King Williams Town) to Cape Town collided head on with Isuzu Double Cab that was travelling from Adelaide to Kwamaqoma. According to the department, the driver of the Isuzu died on the scene and 13 passengers in the Quantum were also declared dead on the scene, including the driver. NPA welcomes conviction in Joshlin Smith disappearance case

WESTERN CAPE - The High Court of South Africa: Western Cape Division today convicted Jacquen Rowhan Appollis, Steveno Dumaizio van Rhyn and Racquel Chantel Smith for Trafficking in Persons for the purpose of exploitation and kidnapping of Joshlin Smith. The Court found that 6-year-old, Joshlin Smith, was sold for slavery or practices similar to slavery, following an agreement reached amongst the accused. The NPA prosecution team was led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in the Western Cape, Adv Zelda Swanepoel and assisted by Senior State Adv Aradhana Heeramun. The two seasoned prosecutors argued that this is a test case of utmost jurisprudential importance; as the case is the first prosecution where the victim, in this case a child, has been sold and has still not been found. CAPE TOWN - In efforts to solve a murder that robbed the community of Kraaifontein of a school principal where Dr Jeffrey Sigudla was shot and killed on the school premises of Ekutheleni Primary School on 23 January 2025, Western Cape police are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the perpetrators. Missing VW Polo driven by three late SAPS Constables recovered - [DETAILS]

GAUTENG - The SAPS National Office has confirmed the recovery of the VW Polo which was used by the three Constables who were reported missing last week. The vehicle was recovered from the Hennops River in Centurion along the N1. FRANTIC VEHICLE SEARCH   All available resources were mobilised to the Hennops River as the search intensifies for the missing VW Polo. SAPS divers, supported by various specialist units combed the area with precision leading to the recovery of pieces of metal which were earlier linked to the missing Polo. SEARCH FOR THE MISSING OFFICERS Earlier, the bodies of the three missing SAPoliceService members were tragically recovered following a reward of R350 000. The three missing constables were 20-year-old Constable Boipelo Senoge, 24-year-old Cebekhulu Linda and 30-year-old Keamogetswe Buys. INVESTIGATION CONTINUES  While the family processes this intricate incident, police continue to probe the cause of members' death.

Freedom Front Plus calls for urgent repair of Joburg Metro roads

JOHANNESURG - The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) says it has asked the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, Kenny Kunene, to urgently repair roads in Roodepoort seeing as the rainy season – which plays a significant role in the formation and expansion of potholes – has come to an end. This offers the Department a golden opportunity to repair roads, said Franco de Lange from the party. "Vehicles incur most damage on roads with a speed limit of between 80 and 100 km/hour as drivers do not have enough time to slack down when they see a pothole. Three juveniles arrested for hijacking in Gqeberha

GQEBERHA - Three juvenile suspects, linked to a hijacking in Swartkops, were arrested during Operation Bamba in the Nelson Mandela Bay District in the Eastern Cape on Monday 28 April 2025.  Investigations are ongoing to determine possible links between the suspects and other criminal cases in New Brighton, Kwazakele, and Motherwell. It is further alleged that the juveniles have been involved in multiple crimes, causing unrest in the community. The three juveniles are scheduled to appear at the Nerina House Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 30 April 2025.

GAUTENG - The South African National Road Agency (SANRAL) has warned motorcycles bypassing toll plazas, labelling the act as  illegal and can result in fines. SANRAL also warned against speeding through the toll booths. "Plus, speeding through toll booths or dodging tolls increases the risk of accidents and non-compliance leads to legal consequences. PARKTOWN - The police in Gauteng have opened a case of arson and investigation is underway after Riverlea Secondary School was gutted by a fire on Sunday, 27 April 2025. A team of senior detectives, that includes Forensic Science Laboratory members, has been established to investigate the matter and to trace the person or people responsible for the burning of the school. TRAGIC: Water Tanker ploughs into home, killing occupants

PIETERMARITZBURG - A six-year-old child is among two killed after Water Tanker crashed into home in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 27 April. Mi7’s Emergency Medical Services attended a tragic scene in Edendale yesterday evening, where a tanker truck transporting drinking water lost control, veered off the roadway, and collided with two residential homes. Upon arrival, Mi7 EMS crews found widespread devastation. Other emergency service providers had already transported five patients from the scene – including a 13-year-old child extricated from beneath the wreckage in critical condition, two adults, and a six-month-old infant. The driver of the tanker was also transported to nearby medical facilities for further care. Mi7 EMS teams remained on site to assist with continued rescue efforts. Two additional individuals were unaccounted for, prompting an extensive extrication operation led by the Pietermaritzburg Fire Department and SAPS Search and Rescue teams. Two hours ...
