KEMPTON PARK - The South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Kidnapping Task Team has safely reunited an Indian businessman with his family following a shootout with an alleged mastermind behind the businessman’s kidnapping. The businessman was found in Alexandra in a shack shortly after midnight on Thursday, 04 September 2025. His rescue follows a shooting in which the alleged mastermind behind his kidnapping was shot and killed during confrontation with police officers near the R21 in Kempton Park on Wednesday evening. The suspect who goes by the nickname “Dollarman” is a wanted kidnapping kingpin in both SA and in Mozambique. He is on SERNIC which is Mozambique’s wanted persons database where he was a wanted for several kidnapping for ransoms cases. In SA he was also linked to at least five kidnapping for ransom cases as well as other cases of housebreaking, carjacking and possession of unlicensed firearms. President Ramaphosa remembers veteran Journalist Tshidi Madia

PRETORIA -  President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to fallen veteran journalist Matshidiso "Tshidi" Madia. "My thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of journalist, political commentator, radio host and moderator Tshidi Madia who has passed away in the prime of her life. "Tshidi loved our country and this was the backdrop to her tough questions and her hopeful vision of a South Africa that can and should be better," said Ramaphosa. "We shall continue to work for Tshidi’s South Africa with her now silent pen and voice in our memories and hearts. Her passing during Women’s Month reminds us of her stature as a remarkable citizen and thought leader presented to the nation as an outstanding woman," the President added. GRAPHIC: One person has died, vehicles linked to e-hailing services torched at Maponya Mall

SOWETO - One person has been declared dead and two injured after e-hailing vehicles were attacked by unknown suspects at Maponya Mall this evening, 13 August 2025. According to information at hand, an ehailing vehicle was seen stopping at the entrance when about four men approached the driver and shot at him before torching the vehicle.  Another vehicle which was nearby was shot at and the driver managed to flee and his vehicle was also torched.  It was later discovered that the driver and another passerby sustain gun shot wounds and were taken to hospital.  A case of murder, attempted murder with two counts and arson is opened for further investigations.  The SAPS and JMPD are on the scene to monitor the situation which is suspected to be taxi violence related.

Dept of Home Affairs to open case against anarchists in Germiston

GERMISTON - The Department of Home Affairs says it is collating evidence and will open criminal charges against the anarchists who set a block of flats on fire in Germiston, which then spread to the neighbouring Home Affairs office.  'It is nothing less than an attack on our social infrastructure and cannot stand," says the department. The Home Affairs building went up in flames amid violent clashes related to eviction disputes. The unrest has led to the closure of key streets, including President, Queen, and Jack. Residents are demanding to occupy Pharoe Park flats without paying rent, escalating tensions on the ground. This is a developing story.

SAPS offer huge sum for arrest of WANTED POLICE KILLER

JOHANNESURG - The South African Police  Service (SAPS) is offering a cash reward for anyone who has information on Jabulani Thabang Moyo who is wanted in connection with the killing of two police officers in Roodepoort on Friday, 08 August 2025. "We are putting a R150 000 cash reward for anyone who can lead us to where he is. This criminal is very dangerous, do not approach him, he has no regard for life and we are warning anyone that has information to come forward and not approach this killer," said SAPS in a statement. Those who may have information on this case including the whereabouts of Moyo are encouraged to call Warrant Officer Rabosiwana from the Hawks on 0728444442.

Twelve passengers injured in bus-taxi crash

DURBAN - Twelve injured in serious accident involving a bus and a taxi on Sarnia Road, Rossburgh Durban just before 6am on Tuesday morning.   ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived on the scene to find total carnage after a bus and a fully laden taxi had collided. Paramedics quickly set up a triage system and immediately called for more ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics to assist with the multiple casualty scene. A total of Twelve people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe and were stabilized on the scene before been transported to various Durban Hospitals for the further care that they required.  At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.

Joint Operation Leads to Recovery of Stolen Vehicle, Two Arrested

PIETERMARITZBURG - On Saturday afternoon, Mi7 Strategic Threat Response Unit members were asked to provide backup to Cartrack teams who were tracing the location of a bakkie that had been stolen from a Midlands property.  A joint operation was immediately initiated between Mi7, Cartrack, and the police's Flying Squad. All units proceeded to the vehicle's last known coordinates in the Ashdown area. There, the stolen bakkie was spotted with two men inside. The team swooped in on the vehicle - strategically surrounding it - and the duo were apprehended. Both men were linked to the theft of the vehicle, and were placed under arrest by police officers on scene. 

Drug trafficker nabbed at OR Tambo Int Airport, cocaine filled bullets valued at R4.2 m seized

KEMPTON PARK - A 25-year-old drug trafficker was arrested on arrival from São Paulo (Brazil) via Doha (Qatar) at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, 29 July 2025. Acting on intelligence, a team comprising Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics Intel Gauteng, ORTIA SAPS Tactical Team, Border Management Authority (BMA), and private security successfully identified and intercepted the Brazilian national shortly after landing. A search of the trafficker's luggage led police to uncover about 10kg of cocaine with an estimate value of R4.2 million. The trafficker was also taken for a medical examination to determine whether cocaine-filled bullets were swallowed. SAPS continues to record commendable successes in dismantling transnational drug syndicates operating between South Africa and other countries. Through targeted intelligence-led operations, more than 25 drug traffickers were arrested since the beginning of the year at this port of entry.

Alleged scholar transport driver cause fatal accident in KZN

DURBAN - A learner has tragically died and several others were injured in a horrific scholar transport accident in Ndwedwe, north of Durban. An alleged 'visibly drunk driver' has become the centre of the investigation, with KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport Siboniso Duma questioning how the driver was allowed to transport learners under such conditions. At 21h30, Duma assigned a team to investigate how a visibly drunk driver was allowed to transport learners in Ndwedwe. This after he received a disturbing video of the drunk driver and other photos.   "I immediately assigned a team to urgently visit the scene of a horrific accident caused by the same driver. Accused in Ekurhuleni City Chief Auditor murder case appears in court

KEMPTON PARK - Thabani Goodwill Ntshalintshali (40), accused of the murder of City of Ekurhuleni Senior Auditor Mpho Mafole, appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on a charge of Murder. The case has been postponed to 15 August 2025 for further investigation. The State alleges that, on 30 June 2025 in Kempton Park, the deceased was allegedly followed after attending a work-related meeting on the day of the incident. He was shot and declared dead at the scene. A witness later informed police about a suspicious vehicle in the area, which led authorities to launch an investigation that eventually pointed to the accused. Ntshalintshali is also facing another pending murder case scheduled for trial on 12 and 19 August 2025. Due to this outstanding case, the State will oppose the bail application. The investigation is ongoing and further arrests cannot be ruled out. The accused remains in custody until his next court appearance.

Township school raided by police on day 1 of new term

DURBAN - Police in KwaZulu-Natal, in conjuction with officials from the Department of Basic Education have made unannounced visits at the Ikusasalethu Secondary School, Newtown Combined School and Inanda Comprehensive School in Inanda on Tuesday morning. The visits are part of the Safer Schools Protocol, which is a joint initiative by the Department of Basic Education and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to create safer learning environments in schools. The Protocol is aimed at addressing social ills such as bullying, gangsterism, substance abuse and gender-based violence. During the visits, police provided valuable safety information to learners, and subsequent searches led to the recovery of dagga and cigarettes.

Polokwane private vehicle testing station manager to appear in court for corruption

   CENTURION - A manager from a privately owned vehicle testing station is scheduled to appear before the Polokwane magistrate court after attempting to bribe a police investigating officer. The manager from Seshego Private Vehicle Testing Station was arrested on Monday after offering a bribe of R8000 to an officer investigating fraud and corruption at his station.   The manager allegedly wanted the investigating officer to release cellphones seized during an earlier search and seizure operation conducted by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit – division of the 2 / 2 Road Traffic Management Corporation and the Limpopo Hawks anti-corruption investigation unit. An entrapment order was obtained and the investigation officer arranged to meet with the manager on Monday (14 July 2025). CAPE TOWN - The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has  welcomed the announcement by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, on the imminent publication of the Lion Prohibition Notice banning new captive lion breeding facilities.   This long-awaited reform marks a pivotal milestone in dismantling an industry built on systemic cruelty, reflecting years of legal action, public advocacy, and inspections by the NSPCA. The prohibition confirms what the NSPCA has long exposed: the captive lion industry has operated largely unabated for decades, inflicting severe animal welfare violations, damaging South Africa’s conservation reputation, and flouting constitutional obligations to protect sentient beings. While limited to new facilities, this ban sends a clear signal that the commodification of lions for tourism, hunting, and the bone trade is no longer defensible. Minister Gwede Mantashe appointed as the Acting Minister of Police

PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Minister Gwede Mantashe as the Acting Minister of Police, effective immediately. Mantashe will temporarily take on the Police portfolio while continuing his duties as Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources. He will serve in this role until Professor Firoz Cachalia retires from the University of the Witwatersrand at the end of this month and officially assumes the position in August. These developments following the leave of absence issued to Minister Senzo Mchunu who currently faces a string of allegations pertaining to corruption and political killings disclosed by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi last week. Deputy National Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya placed on leave of absence

PRETORIA - The  Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya has been reportedly placed on leave of absence amid allegations levelled against him by KZN police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.  It is understood that the instruction came directly from National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola. This development comes just two days after Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, also implicated in corruption and political killings, was given leave of absence by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday. Ramaphosa has established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the claims made by Mkhwanazi. Meanwhile, the KZN Commissioner has received widespread support from civil organisations and private security companies and have marched for his protection. This is a developing story.

CAPE TOWN - The Cape of Good Hope SPCA Wildlife Inspectors have launched an urgent investigation into a horrific case of animal cruelty involving a Chacma Baboon that was slaughtered – allegedly for consumption. Disturbing video footage of the incident has been circulating on social media, showing the brutal killing of an adult baboon. The footage was brought to our attention yesterday, and our team immediately jumped into action. CAPE TOWN - "In order for the Commission to execute its functions effectively, I have decided to put the Minister of Police Mr Senzo Mchunu on a leave of absence with immediate effect," said President Cyril Ramaphosa after establishing a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the crimes and leadership of various institutions implicated in the claims made by KZN Commissioner Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Ramaphosa said Mchunu has undertaken to give his full cooperation to the Commission to enable it to do its work. "I have decided to appoint Professor Firoz Cachalia as acting Minister of Police," he said.
