MPUMALANGA - Slain Journalist Aserie Ndlovu, who went missing was laid to rest today, Saturday 21 June.  Ndlovu, who would've turned 39 today, was buried on his birthday - making the sombre send-off a celebration of his life as well. He and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli, went missing in February. Their decomposed bodies were discovered in a veld in Limpopo.   Police believe they were abducted from their KwaMhlanga home, robbed, and later killed.  Zodwa was laid to rest earlier this week while family and friends gathered to pay their last rest to the fallen journalist today. A total of five suspects have been arrested for the couple's murder. All have appeared in KwaMhlanga Magistrates Court.

FOURWAYS - The South African Police Service(SAPS) Anti-kidnapping task team traced a Mozambican kidnapping kingpin to a block of apartments in Fourways, Johannesburg this week. The team was tracing a kidnapped Pakistani businessman from Pretoria West. He is still in captivity and the team are still searching for the Pakistani national. A ransom demand has been made to the businessman’s family. The teams tracing operation began at a residential complex in Carlswald, Midrand where they seized a Mercedes Benz, a silver Pajero and arrested two kidnappers. They proceeded to Fourways where the task team announced their arrival and a shoot-out ensued. One suspect was fatally wounded and upon further investigation, it was discovered that 40-year-old Mauro Mucambe Junior is a wanted Kidnapping kingpin in Mozambique where he has been linked to several kidnappings. JOHANNESURG - SuperSport has confirmed the sudden passing of its legendary commentator Phumlani Msibi on the official channels. "The channel is saddned to learn of the passing of legendary sports commentator, presenter and anchor Phumlani Msibi. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues following this great loss," SuperSport said. According to reports, Msibi, who was born on 15 December 1967 in Durban, died on Friday, 20 June 2025, after a short illness at the age of 57. He will be remembered by the fans and the sporting community for his incredible style of commentary and interview skills pre and post matches.

MTHATHA - Eastern Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a murder investigation following the fatal shooting of a Walter Sisulu University (WSU) staff member on Thursday, 19 June 2025, at approximately 17:39. The incident occurred near the Nkululekweni entrance gate adjacent to the N2 highway on the WSU Mthatha campus.  Police discovered the victim deceased inside a stationary vehicle. Preliminary forensic analysis confirms the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds while seated in the driver’s position. The motive remains unknown. The identity of the deceased will be formally released once next-of-kin notification is complete, as per SAPS protocol. PRETORIA - Outdoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has asked Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy to waive fines and temporary licences for those whose new driving licence cards are stuck in the backlog. The Department of Transport reported a backlog of 690 000 driving licence cards last week (see here), arising from the breakdown earlier this year of the sole card-printing machine. On 17 June, OUTA’s Advocate Stefanie Fick wrote to the Minister, asking her to consider extending the validity period for all cards to 10 years and, while the card backlog exists: 1. MTHATHA - The Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, strongly condemns the threats and intimidation directed at humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers while they were delivering lifesaving assistance to flood-affected communities in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. It is alleged that members of a so-called “water mafia,” reportedly linked to service providers contracted by the OR Tambo District Municipality, threatened Gift of the Givers staff as they distributed clean drinking water to residents impacted by the recent floods.  Minister Mchunu was in Mthatha this past weekend, to engage with and thank members of the SAPS for their efforts during the floods which have to date, tragically claimed 90 lives and displaced hundreds more. PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms. Angie Motshekga, to serve as Acting President of the Republic of South Africa from 17 to 19 June 2025. The appointment in accordance with section 90 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, follows the President’s visit to Canada to attend the G7 Leadership Summit, as well as Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s concurrent working visit to Moscow in the Russian Federation.

KWAZULU-NATAL- The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is mourning the tragic passing of its members whose lives were lost following a Bus A accident after Youth Day Rally in Umlazi, south of Durban over the weekend. KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma confirmed at least 12 deaths the accident on the R34 near Vryheid. "The EFF sends it deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who have lost their lives. These Fighters lost their lives following a show of support for the revolution they belonged to and they must be remembered as heroes to whom we owe a great debt.   "These were committed Fighters, who had attended the rally to honour the courage of the youth of 1976 and to continue the struggle for economic freedom. VRYHEID - KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased following an accident that claimed over 10 lives this past weekend. Duma confirmed 12 passengers died from a sideswipe accident involving a truck and Passenger Bus in R34 near Vryheid. Based on the report from the RTI, after the head-on collision, the truck struck the side of the bus. Sadly, the sideswipe resulted in the following: 1. 12 passengers died and are being taken to Vryheid Mortuary. 2. Ten passengers are seriously injured and are being taken to various local hospitals. 3. Twenty-two passengers are slightly injured. 4. Six passengers were not injured. 5. The truck and bus drivers survived and have been taken to hospitals. "We have agreed with the RTI team that we will work with the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the South African Police Service as part of a comprehensive investigation," said MEC Duma.
