Kaizer Chiefs aim for "unique" hattrick against Orlando Pirates

Image
DURBAN - When Kaizer Chiefs face their old foes, Orlando Pirates, in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday afternoon, they will be looking to dethrone their Soweto rivals, who have won the last two editions of the competition.  HISTORY OF 1972 It is not new territory for Chiefs and Pirates to meet where one of the sides is the defending champion; it has happened 10 times since 1972. What is unique is that Chiefs have previous experience of denying the Buccaneers a successful defence of the Nedbank Cup at the final stage. This has happened twice previously, with Chiefs aiming for a unique hat-trick come Saturday. UNIQUE HISTORY   According to the club, when Pirates had won three titles in succession in 1973, 1974 and 1975 (including defeating Chiefs 2-1 in the latter final), they were halted in their tracks by Amakhosi’s 1-0 win the 1976 final in Umlazi. Chiefs’ only goal in that game came courtesy of Pule ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe, Chiefs...

#NedbankCup: Kaizer Chiefs striker vows to rise to the occasion

Image
NATURENA - Defending Nedbank Cup champions, Orlando Pirates stand in the way of Kaizer Chiefs securing a piece of major silverware for the first time in 10 years and gifted veteran, Gaston Sirino, is feeling positive that he can end his debut season as a Glamour Boy with a winner’s medal. “I am feeling good,” he reveals, “It’s a good opportunity to win a trophy, which is what I am here for. Everybody, including me, needs to take responsibility. We must play better than them, control the game. We played well against them last weekend but didn’t get the result we wanted.” However, the vastly experienced Uruguayan believes that the secret to success lies in minimising the errors that have proven fatal in the past. “We have played well in many games but we have also made mistakes that have cost us. We can’t afford that on Saturday,” he says, insisting, “Our concentration has to be fully focused for the whole game. We have a great opportunity to make history and have a positive ...

The Buccaneers will be the favourites to win this Cup Final after edging Chiefs to a 2-1 victory on 3 May.

Du Preez books Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates

Image
PRETORIA - Striker Ashley Du Preez came off the bench to score a dramatic last minute winner, as Kaizer Chiefs came from behind to defeat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in a gripping Nedbank Cup semifinal at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria on Sunday. They are now set up for a mouthwatering Soweto Derby final against Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban on 10 May, just one step away from finally getting their hands on silverware. Amakhosi were unfortunate to go into the halftime break a goal down, after Teboho Mokoena scored from a free kick in stoppage time of a very evenly matched first 45 minutes. However, their persistence paid off in the second half, first through Wandile Duba’s composed finish in the 57th minute and right at the death, from an equally well-taken goal from Du Preez. Amakhosi will face Orlando Pirates in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Moses Mabhida next month.

Drama as Orlando Pirates secures CAFCL Semi-final ticket

Image
SOWETO - Orlando Pirates are in the CAF Champions League semifinals following their goalless draw in the deciding leg of their quarter-final tie against MC Alger at Orlando Stadium.  Wednesday’s dramatic result secured their ticket to the last four as they progress through a 1-0 aggregate score after their narrow win in the away leg. "It’s a welcome return to the semis for the Soweto Giants, whose last appearance at a similar stage of the tournament was back in 2013. Their triumph sets them up for a return to North Africa, where they will engage in a historic battle with Egyptian outfit Pyramids," the club said. Mayhem ensued after the final whistle as sore losers MC Alger squad started a scuffle against the Buccaneers whose fans jumped into Orlando stadium to defend its players. Public Order Police and stadium security had to intervene to separate the brawl.

A further inspection has confirmed that the course has not yet sufficiently recovered to resume safely. Orlando Pirates Coach José Riveiro steps down at the end of the season

Image
SOWETO -  José Riveiro has announced his decision to step down as Head Coach at the end of the season. Goodbyes are never easy. They tug at the heart, reminding us of the moments we wish could last forever. But in football, as in life, they are sometimes necessary. When Coach José arrived in 2022, he didn’t just take charge of a team, he mended broken spirits, reignited lost hope. Coming out of the 2021/22 season the Buccaneers had finished 6th in the league with only 10 wins from the 30 matches; a first-round exit in the MTN8 to Swallows as well as a defeat to Marumo Gallants in the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup. Football has a propensity to judge people too quickly and naturally an unknown José would be scrutinised before even setting foot on South African soil. However, the 47-year-old has since made believers out of doubters. He has given the Pirates supporters more than just victories; he gave them a reason to dream again. And now, as the end of the season draws ...
