JUST IN: Truck crash and diesel spillage cause total road closure of N1

JOHANNESURG - Following the earlier motor vehicle accident involving two trucks on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmedt that all lanes of the N1 South are closed to traffic. According to JMPD, this closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene and clear the diesel spillage and overturned vehicle. "Three slight injuries have been reported, and one of the trucks has overturned, spilling diesel. Emergency personnel and Law Enforcement are on scene, and initially, three lanes were affected and closed off, causing heavy delays. "All lanes of the N1 South are currently closed before Maraisburg Road. Vehicles are being diverted at Gordon Road. Significant and heavy traffic congestion is being experienced on the N1 South and surrounding areas," said JMPD. 48-hour manhunt leads to murder suspects' arrests

JOHANNESURG - Four male suspects aged 20 to 39 were arrested in connection with a murder that occurred in Yeoville, Johannesburg, on April 9, 2025.  Following a 48-hour manhunt by the JMPD's Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and Integrated Intelligence Operations Centre (IIOC), the suspects were located and apprehended on April 10th after being identified through CCTV footage.  One suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.  All four are detained at Yeoville SAPS and charged with murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspects will be appearing in court soon.

Police arrest trio for kidnapping and robbery in Tshwane

GAUTENG - An intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of three suspects aged between 57 and 34 for kidnapping and robbery in Tshwane District on Thursday, 03 April 2025. The collaborative effort between the police from Akasia and Garankuwa including Crime Intelligence unit, Tshwane Flying Squad, Bank Forensic investigation and TMPD K9 resulted in the successful rescue of a 50-year-old woman kidnapped in Ga-Rankuwa on March 31 2025. The victim's son reported her missing and it was later discovered that funds were withdrawn from the victim's bank account. The police investigations led to two suspects at a house in Karen Park where the victim was also kept. She was rescued and provided medical treatment before being united with her family. Congolese bouncer linked to Zanzou Hatfield sexual assault granted bail

PRETORIA – A 41-year-old Congolese national was granted R10 000 bail by the Pretoria Magistrates' Court on 9 April.  He is facing 8 counts of compelled sexual assault and 6 counts of assault with grievous bodily harm. The charges emanate from two case dockets opened against the accused. It is alleged that in April 2022, the accused assaulted the two victims in the matter. In a separate incident in January 2023, it is alleged that the accused compelled four male persons to perform sexual acts on themselves.   This was discovered when videos surfaced on social media, which resulted in six complainants opening cases against the accused. In his affidavit, he asked to be released on bail because he has three children and a wife he needs to provide for, and he has no previous cases or pending cases. SOWETO - Orlando Pirates are in the CAF Champions League semifinals following their goalless draw in the deciding leg of their quarter-final tie against MC Alger at Orlando Stadium.  Wednesday’s dramatic result secured their ticket to the last four as they progress through a 1-0 aggregate score after their narrow win in the away leg. "It’s a welcome return to the semis for the Soweto Giants, whose last appearance at a similar stage of the tournament was back in 2013. JOHANNESURG - No injuries or fatalities were reported following a building fire in the Johannesburg CBD last night. Joburg EMS firefighters responded to a fire incident in the Inner City on the evening of Tuesday, 8 April 2025. The fire occurred on the second floor of a three-story building. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, and the fire has since been fully extinguished, according to the City of Johannesburg. "The remainder of our inspection teams are on-site to assess the structural damage to the building, as well as any additional destruction the fire may have caused," the City updated.

Minister to visit Vaal Dam amid heavy inflows

GAUTENG - The Department of  Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, together with Deputy Minister David Mahlobo will visit the Vaal Dam this morning to assess the water resource infrastructure amid heavy inflows into the dam as a result of ongoing rainfall in the Vaal River Catchment. Due to torrential rains in the past few weeks, the Department of Water and Sanitation had to implement necessary dam safety precautions and controlled water releases from the dam to safeguard the infrastructure.  The Department has five sluice gates opened gradually from 20 March 2025 with the fifth sluice opened on Sunday, 06 April. The Vaal Dam is currently releasing 793 cubic metres per second (mᵌ/s) of water downstream the Vaal River System into the Bloemhof Dam, while the Bloemhof has also activated its releases up to 3000 mᵌ/s. POLOKWANE - Limpopo Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Funani Jerry Maseko, has extended his support to three determined young cyclists from Burgersfort whose mission is to cycle all the way to Cape Town. JOHANNESURG - A fire has ravaged a building in the Johannesburg CBD this evening, Tuesday, 8 April, rendering the area unsafe. The City of Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has confirmed that firefighters are currently attending to the fire incident reported in the inner city. SABC apologises to Afrikaans communities for bulletin error

AUCKLAND PARK - The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has addressed the worrying glitch that resulted in the abrupt halt of the Afrikaans bulletin. The SABC  reaffirmed that the Afrikaans news has not been discontinued. Afrikaans News currently broadcasts at 20:30 Mondays – Fridays on S3. Weekend Afrikaans bulletins will continue in their current time slot, 18:00 on Saturdays and Sundays on SABC 2. "The SABC remains committed to all languages as part of its constitutional and public service mandate. Fifth sluice gate opened as rain causes rapid inflow at Vaal Dam

GAUTENG - Due to the rapid increase of inflows into the Vaal Dam, the Department of Water and Sanitation says a fifth sluice gate has been opened at 10h00 this morning to manage water levels that have increased overnight as a result of the ongoing rainfall in the Vaal River catchment.  This is in about 24 hours after the Department opened the fourth sluice gate at the Vaal Dam. The water storage levels at dam stood at 107.82% yesterday, but as of this morning the levels  have risen to 109.39%. The outflows at the dam will move from 550 cubic metres per second  (mᵌ/s) to just under 700 mᵌ/s. The inflows into the dam are currently 1000 m3/s.  Bloemhof Dam storage levels have also risen from yesterday’s 103.23% to 106.91% this morning, and water releases will be staggered incrementally from the current 1000 mᵌ/s to 1 100 m³/s at 10am; 1 200 m³/s at 12h00; 1 300 m³/s at 14h00 and the last increase at 16h00 to 1 400 m3/s. EThekwini announces major water disruptions due to Water Treatment Works this week

DURBAN - The EThekwini Municipality has informed the public of the planned interruption of water supply from various reservoirs supplied by the uMngeni-uThukela Wiggins Water Treatment Works gravity system.   The shutdown will take place on Tuesday morning, 8 April until Wednesday, 9 April.                    The shutdown is for the City’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW) to replace 1200 mm diameter sales and check meters on the gravity bulk pipeline.    In preparation for the shutdown, UUW will commence by draining out the reservoir networks and open the scour once all reservoirs have reached a low level.   During the shutdown period, there will be no water flowing into the City’s reservoirs.
