Kaizer Chiefs Chairman befittingly conferred with Wits Honorary Doctorate

JOHANNESBURG - In recognition of his substantial contribution to South Africa’s business landscape over many decades, Kaizer Chiefs Executive Chairman, Dr. Kaizer Motaung, was bestowed with a second honorary doctorate on Tuesday, this time by Wits University’s Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. Motaung, a successful businessperson, soccer administrator and philanthropist, delivered a speech that struck a chord with graduates from the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. He delivered his address after Wits University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Commerce on 15 July at the Wits Great Hall. SHOCKING: EMPD officers fatally shot and killed en route to work

  TEMBISA – Two Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit Officers were gunned down by ruthless criminals at Umthambeka Section, in the Tembisa area on Thursday evening, 12 June.   It is alleged that the two (2) EMPD Specialized Services Officers, were reporting for night shift duty enroute to collect a colleague, while waiting for their colleague at a house at Extension 11, when they were confronted by unknown armed criminals who opened fire, fatally wounding the Officers. The suspects robbed the Officers of their service pistols and fled on foot, where an unknown getaway vehicle was waiting for them to flee the scene.   This comes as a great lost for the EMPD and the City of Ekurhuleni. EASTERN CAPE - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast fine and cold to cool but partly cloudy weather with showers and rain expected in the north-east of the country. There are currently no weather alerts on their website. Earlier this week, the country was gripped with severe winter weather with the Eastern Cape experiencing snowfall and heavy rain. President Cyril Ramaphosa visited flood-affected areas in the Eastern Cape, due to rising casualties and damage to infrastructure in the OR Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities.

MTHATHA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in the Eastern Cape to assess the extent of the devastation caused by recent floods.  His visit follows the rising number of casualties and widespread damage to infrastructure in the OR Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities. The President is joined by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa and Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabunyane on search and rescue efforts, and additional support needed to comprehensively respond across all levels to the devastating disaster. Ramaphosa has expressed his sadness at the loss of lives and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, affected communities and Eastern Cape residents at large. He will commence his oversight visit to the flood-affected sites accompanied by Minister Hlabisa, Premier Mabuyane and leaders of the disaster response.

SA GOVT BANS Halephirimi import with immediate effect

PRETORIA - The South African Government has reportedly, with immediate effect, banned the import of the toxic chemical rodenticides, also known as halephirimi.  The banned chemical was allegedly linked to the deaths of children in Soweto last year. An investigation revealed that school children from Soweto died after eating food laced with the poison. This is a developing story.

Police issue reward for arrest of suspect in murder of IFP Deputy Chief Whip

PARKTOWN - The police in Gauteng have issued a reward of R60 000.00 to anyone who can come forth with information that will lead to the arrest and successful conviction of Zamani Ngila Ximba who is wanted for the murder of Inkatha Freedom Party Deputy Chief Whip, Mr Khethamabala Sithole, and attempted murder of two other people at Buyafuthi Hostel in Katlehong on the 31 May 2025. The suspect is tall, dark in complexion and deemed armed and very dangerous. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect is urged to call Major General Mbuso Khumalo at 082 556 8642 or Captain Abe Montoedi at 082 461 4794 Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or by using MySAPS App. All received information will be treated as confidential.

ROAD CLOSURE: SANRAL advises of blasting scheduled on N2 between KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni, Eastern Cape

EASTERN CAPE - The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has advised road users that blasting is scheduled to take place on the N2 national road between KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni in the Eastern Cape. The blasting will take place on Friday, 13 June 2025, at 12pm, approximately 8.8 kilometres (km) from KwaBhaca when travelling towards EmaXesibeni. The road will be closed during the blasting activities for a maximum of 30 minutes. “Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes and to use caution when making use of the road,” SANRAL said. Motorists travelling from Kokstad towards Mthatha may consider the following alternative routes:  Go onto the R56 route and travel past Matatiele and then past Tlokoeng until Nqanqarhu, then take the R396 towards Tsolo until you join the N2, and then proceed to Mthatha. Stay on the N2 until Pakade (18km out of Kokstad), then turn left onto the R394 and join the R61 at Magusheni. Slip right o...

Man accused of Likhona Fose's murder appears in court

  ROODEPOORT - A 39-year-old man, Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court, facing one count of murder. The allegation relate to the murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, whose corpse was discovered in an open veld at Durban Deep on 02 June 2025.  Fose had left her home on 31 May 2025 and never returned. Her mother alerted her brother, who had slept over at a relative on Friday, 30 May, after knocking off from work. On arrival back at home, the brother saw a message from the community group that a young girl’s corpse had been discovered. He went to the scene and requested to see the corpse and devastatingly discovered that it was indeed that of his younger sister.  The case has been postponed to 18 July 2025 for a formal bail hearing. The NPA condemns the brutal killing of Fose and will leave no stone unturned in its pursuit of justice.  

Comrades Marathon recorded NO DEATHS on Sunday

PIETERMARITZBURG - The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) and its medical team can confirm that no deaths have been recorded at the 2025 event. This after it has been brought to the CMA attention of the that some digital media outlets or accounts are reporting two deaths during the 2025 edition of the race, which took place this past weekend (Sunday 8 June).  "As can be expected from an event of this nature and size, there were some cases of runners being transferred to hospital from the route, for various medical reasons. The CMA medical, emergency, safety and health protocols are excellent, and focused on the safety of all runners,” says CMA General Manager Alain Dalais. “The CMA distances itself from any fake news or rumours doing the rounds, and suggests that our community rely on reputable sources for information – starting with our own channels,” he adds.

Seven detainees injured in crash near Richmond

KWAZULU-NATAL - Seven detainees were injured in a crash near Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 9 June. ALS Paramedics from the Hibiscus Cato Ridge Operation responded to numerous calls of assistance needed on the R56 near the Eston Turnoff between Richmond and Ixopo just after 10am. Paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a SAPS vehicle transporting detainees had somehow lost control and rolled coming to rest on its roof. A total of seven passengers had sustained various injuries and were stabilized on the scene by ALS Paramedics and multiple other Ambulance Services before all of the inmates were transported to a nearby Hospital.  The Police Officers sustained no injuries. This is a developing story.

KZN SNOW ALERT: Kokstad and Port Shepstone NO GO AREAS, Road Grader deployed to clear snow

KOKSTAD - The N2 around Kokstad and Port Shepstone has been closed due to snowfall.  In  a statement, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma has urged motorists and snow chasers to avoid the area at all costs Prevention is Better than Cure. "I wish to advise motorists and the people of KwaZulu-Natal that our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate has closed the N2 due to snowfall around Kokstad and Port Shepstone. "To save lives, we have decided to close completely the road between Kokstad and Pietemaritzburg as well as R603 - Tacoma to Reit," he said. "Our message to motorists and Snow Chasers is that prevention is better than cure. We, therefore, urge motorists and general members of the public to avoid that area at all costs by delaying their trips leading to Kokstad as trucks are already stuck and creating huge congestion," he added. Several passes CLOSED IN EASTERN CAPE due to SNOWFALL - SEE

ALIWAL NORTH - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has issued precautionary travel warnings to motorists set to travel across the province due to snowfall that has caused road closures. According to the department, the following mountain passes are closed due to the inclement weather conditions (Snowfall, rain & excessive winds): 1. Barkley Pass along the R58 between Barkly East & Elliot. 2. Penhoek Pass along the N6 between Komani and Aliwal North.  "It is snowing and raining in most parts of the province. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, postpone their travelling & exercise extra caution when driving on our roads." Also, Lootsberg Pass (N9) between Graaff-Reinet & Middelburg was closed yesterday snowfall continues and is getting thicker on the roads, making travel unsafe.  Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes. Missing Comrades Marathon athlete FOUND SAFE and ALIVE

DURBAN - Missing Comrades Marathon Moira Harding has been found and is alive.  The Comrades Marathon Association confirmed on social media today. Initially, a missing person alert was issued by the Association saying Moira Harding - Race number: M33485 had been missing since the race on Sunday. She was confirmed to have finished the Comrades race at 16:52 but has not been seen since.    However, new information emerged that she is safe and sound.

MUST SEE: 12-YEAR-OLD unlawful driver cause FATAL pedestrian ACCIDENT

EAST RAND - A 12-YEAR-OLD was handed in at a local police station after being involved in a fatal pedestrian accident in Brakpan over the weekend. On Saturday, 07 June 2025 at 13:45, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Accident Bureau Officers, attended to an accident that claimed the life of a fourteen(14) year-old, in the Brakpan area.   The Officers were summoned to the accident that occurred at the corner of Northdene and Medeley Street in. Upon arrival Officers found the lifeless body of a fourteen (14) year-old pedestrian, who was declared deceased on scene by the paramedics. Also at the scene, the officers found a Mazda that allegedly bumped the pedestrian driven by a twelve (12) year-old driver.   The driver was handed in, at the company of his guardian, to the Brakpan South African Police Service (SAPS). DURBAN - Comrades favourite Tete Dijane has claimed his third ComradesMarathon victory and defended his down run title. Tete, a South African #ComradesMarathon runner finished the 98th edition in 5:25:28 - dominating the race once again. He is the first black South African runner to win three titles since Bongmusa Mthembu. In the Women’s Race, 𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐃A 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐘𝐍 did it again, winning her 4th race. This is a developing story.

PMB Mayor launch starter-pistol for Comrades Marathon 2025

PIETERMARITZBURG - Worship Cllr Mzimkhulu Thebolla launched the starter pistol- officially opening and staring the Comrades Marathon 2025 from the steps of City Hall. For the first time in the comrades history, the race featured two separate starts , a milestone that took place within the City of Choice.  "We wish all runners a safe, successful, and fulfilling Down Run," said Thebolla. The race will finish in Durban later today.

RIP: Mzansi bids farewell to Presley Oageng Chweneyagae

PRETORIA - Renowned South African actor Presley Oageng Chweneyagae was laid to rest today, Saturday, 7 June. Cobrizi, a character loved by many on The River, saw family, close friend and industry colleagues pay their last tribute to the fallen thespian. Chweneyagae was only 40 years old when he met his demise. Fans will remember him from his breakout role on Tsotsi, a Oscar winning film and Emmy nominee, film which shaped his career to greatness.
