JUST IN: Truck crash and diesel spillage cause total road closure of N1

JOHANNESURG - Following the earlier motor vehicle accident involving two trucks on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmedt that all lanes of the N1 South are closed to traffic. According to JMPD, this closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene and clear the diesel spillage and overturned vehicle. "Three slight injuries have been reported, and one of the trucks has overturned, spilling diesel. Emergency personnel and Law Enforcement are on scene, and initially, three lanes were affected and closed off, causing heavy delays. "All lanes of the N1 South are currently closed before Maraisburg Road. Vehicles are being diverted at Gordon Road. Significant and heavy traffic congestion is being experienced on the N1 South and surrounding areas," said JMPD. CAPETOWN - "Welcome to Cape Town, Gauta, Maxwell and Karabo!! You made it!!" said the City of Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis after the boys embarked on gruelling cycling journey from Limpopo to the Western Cape capital. "These 3 guys have cycled from Limpopo to Cape Town. 14 days on the road, over 1700km! They’ve raised money for their community to establish a cycling club to introduce more young people to the joys of cycling. On the journey, they’ve also captured the hearts of the nation," said Hill-Lewis  Although this journey was beyond imaginable, DJ Karri who caught up with the boys along the Free State Province brought ease to the journey as he used his influence on social media to push this great cause. The cyclists were supported by brands and individuals until reaching the Mother City.

POLOKWANE - Limpopo Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Funani Jerry Maseko, has extended his support to three determined young cyclists from Burgersfort whose mission is to cycle all the way to Cape Town. The cyclists driven by passion, perseverance and a spirit of unity, Karabo Mokowo from Riba cross in Sekhukhune District aged 21, Mahlakwane Gauta from Ga Mathabathe-Makgoba Capricorn District aged 22 and Ndo Maxwell from Vhembe aged 24, embarked on the ambitious journey with hopes of inspiring young people across the country.  MEC Maseko hailed the cyclists as “true ambassadors of hope and resilience,” adding that their journey demonstrates the power of sport to unite, uplift and motivate young people. “These young cyclists are not only challenging themselves physically, but they are also carrying the dreams of a generation. SAPSET Student Leadership Camp prepares youth for a bright future

GAUTENG - National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, has called on students participating in the 2nd SAPSET Student Leadership Camp to remain focused on their studies and help close South Africa’s skills gap. The four-day camp, hosted at Sediba Kwele Adventure Camp, brought together 43 students from Grades 10 to 12 under the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) programme. The initiative prepares learners for the upcoming school term while nurturing leadership qualities and career readiness.  These students are children of deceased SAPS members, with many coming from provinces with the highest rates of police killings, including the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng. SAPSET continues to honour the legacy of fallen officers by investing in the education and personal development of their children. The public is also advised to please keep drowning prevention measures top of mind at all times. Upgrade of Muizenberg beachfront starts this month

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town wants to alert the public that the refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront will commence next week.  The contractor will establish the site camp and work areas as from Monday, 3 February 2025, and effect the closure of the impacted sections on the western side of Surfer’s Corner the following week, if all goes as planned. The informal gravel parking area next to the railway line will be closed to the public, as will access to and from the St James Walkway from Surfer’s Corner. Joggers and walkers wanting to access the walkway will be redirected with detour signage to and from the underpass at Bailey’s Cottage and the rail level crossing at the beachfront. The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront entails major upgrades to public amenities and replacing the aged seawalls.
