JUST IN: Truck crash and diesel spillage cause total road closure of N1

JOHANNESURG - Following the earlier motor vehicle accident involving two trucks on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmedt that all lanes of the N1 South are closed to traffic. According to JMPD, this closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene and clear the diesel spillage and overturned vehicle. "Three slight injuries have been reported, and one of the trucks has overturned, spilling diesel. Emergency personnel and Law Enforcement are on scene, and initially, three lanes were affected and closed off, causing heavy delays. "All lanes of the N1 South are currently closed before Maraisburg Road. Vehicles are being diverted at Gordon Road. Significant and heavy traffic congestion is being experienced on the N1 South and surrounding areas," said JMPD. Former Free State Govt technical manager arrested for fraud

FREE STATE - A former Dihlabeng Local Municipality technical manager (30) is set to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrates Court on Monday, 13 January 2025 facing charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering.  He was arrested on 10 January 2025 by Bethlehem Serious Corruption Investigation. In January 2024, Hawks detectives received information about the irregularities regarding a R9,8 million tender to upgrade water supply to Clarens. It is alleged that the Chief Financial Officer of Dihlabeng Local Municipality had processed payment to the service provider based on a report supplied by the former technical manager. It later emerged that the civil engineer's signature in the report was forged by the suspect. Evidence to this effect was collected and presented before the prosecution. On 10 January 2025, a warrant for the suspect's arrest was authorised.

KZN: Escaped prisoner re-arrested in KwaMashu

DURBAN - A 18 year old prisoner who escaped from custody prior to appearing for a formal bail application in the Ntuzuma Magistrate Court in KwaMashu in Durban was rapidly re-arrested on Thursday, 8 January. A passerby contacted the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Phoenix Operations Centre at approximately 15:38 after they noticed a man being pursued on foot by Police Officers. Reaction Officers were immediately mobilised to provide support.  On arrival, it was established that the teenager was transported from Westville Prison to court for a formal bail application in a theft case. He escaped while being escorted from the Police transportation.  RUSA Members & SAPS Officials conducted an extensive search of the area and located the suspect attempting to conceal himself under a trailer in a truck yard.  He was immediately re-arrested.

Four alleged hijackers in Mandela house scandal appear in court

Four accused appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, charged for allegedly robbing an Uber driver and stealing his vehicle in the area of Houghton . The accused face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and assault. The state alleges that on 8 January 2025, the four individuals requested an Uber ride but instead allegedly robbed the driver of his vehicle.  The driver reported the incident to the tracking company, alerting the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit.  The unit tracked the hijacked vehicle to a residence in Houghton, previously owned by former President Nelson Mandela. Upon entering the property, officers arrested five individuals and recovered the alleged stolen vehicle, its number plate and a firearm. Chaos as Iguana mistaken for Crocodile on KZN farm

A housing complex in Hammonds Farm in KwaZulu-Natal was  turned upside down after mistaken a roaming juvenile Iguana for a crocodile on Thursday, 9 January. Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were called out by a resident claiming to have spotted a Crocodile in her yard. The caller believed that the crocodile entered the residential property from a stream and through a bush at the rear of her home.  Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched. On arrival, Officers were shown a picture captured by a neighbour. RUSA Members confirmed that it was not a Crocodile but an Iguana. The reptile fled into a hole between a boundary wall and a neighbouring outbuilding that are centimetres apart.  Reaction Officers spent several hours attempting to trap the reptile without success. Three taken in by police for questioning after taxi-related violence left three killed

NELSPRUIT - Three male persons were taken in by the Police for questioning after a tragic incident that took place on Thursday afternoon on the R543 (De Wet) Road in Piet Retief, where three males lost their lives in a shooting incident believed to be related to taxi conflict. The shooting occurred on Thursday afternoon, 09 January 2025, after 15h00. Following the incident, various stakeholders came on board and assisted hence the three male persons were cornered in Chrissiesmeer then taken for questioning by the Police. At this point, the motive for the killing remains unknown. RIP: Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza passes away at 51

South Africa is mourning another loss of a musical icon, Kwaito legend Victor Bogopane, affectionately known as Doc Shebeleza. The Kwaito pioneer whose passing was announced today (Thursday, 9 January) died at the age of 51 after a couple of months of poor health. Tributes messages have began flooding the socials, with many fans remembering the legend. Doc Shebeleza was known for his electrifying stage presence and timeless hits that shaped the Kwaito music genre. His legacy was also solidified by Hip Hop giant Cassper Nyovest who paid homage to the legend by dropping a smashing hit called Doc Shebeleza , which changed the game forever. His untimely passing comes days after the sad passing of afropop icon Winnie Khumalo who also died at the age of 51. The miracle baby that survived from the N3 crash along Van Reneen Pass this week, continues to recover and her mother is alive. NEW DEVELOPMENTS   Flowing from the report of the initial stage of the investigation into the cause of the horrific accident involving a truck and a minibus taxi on Van Reenan Pass, the KZN Department of Transport MEC Siboniso Duma provided an updated report which reads as follows: 1. Toddler (1) shot dead under mysterious circumstances in Durban township

A one-year-old baby was shot and killed under mysterious circumstances at J Section in Umlazi on Monday.  He was with his mother at home on Pigogo Road on the day of the ordeal.  According to the SA Police Service: “Reports indicate that the boy was alone in the house while the mother was sweeping the yard. The mother reportedly heard the sound of a gun going off and when she looked around, she noticed that the gate was closed. When she went inside the house she found the boy lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the forehead. No one was seen leaving the house.” The matter is under investigation. Suspects arrested at former President Nelson Mandela's home in Houghton

  Johannesburg - Suspects have been arrested for possession of a hijacked vehicle and unlicensed firearm in Houghton, Johannesburg. According to the statement, this morning (Wednesday, 8 January), officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit received information from a vehicle tracking company regarding the location of a white Toyota Corolla that was hijacked earlier today along Louis Botha Avenue in Oaklands.  "Acting on this information, officers proceeded to a residence in Houghton, previously owned by former President Nelson Mandela. Upon entering the property, officers recovered the hijacked vehicle and apprehended four individuals: three males and one female," said JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla. Johannesburg - South African musician and actress Winnie Khumalo has sadly passed away at her home after a short illness. Khumalo, who has enjoyed success in her resounding music career, was only 51 years old. Her death was announced today, Tuesday, 7 January. Heartfelt tribute messages have began flooding various social media networks, including those of fellow colleagues in the entertainment industry and fans. JMPD arrests over 300 motorists for excessive speeding

Joburg - The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has ramped up its operations across the city to combat lawlessness, enhance road safety, and address the alarming rate of serious and fatal accidents. From 01 December 2024 to 05 January 2025, a total of 512 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Additionally, the JMPD High-Speed Unit apprehended 364 motorists for excessive speeding. According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, Region F, which includes the Joburg CBD, Hillbrow, Yeoville, Kensington, Berea, Mayfair, Turffontein, Rossetenville, and surrounding areas, recorded the highest number of DUI arrests, with over 300 motorists apprehended. All lanes have been reportedly reopened on the N3 following a deadly crash on the Van Reenen Pass. 18 people were killed after a taxi, truck and light motor vehicle were involved in a horrific accident at N3-6X Km 49S last night. "All lanes have been reopened to traffic but please note, cleanup operations will resume later today which may cause further traffic disruptions along Van Reenen Pass," N3TC noted. An accident between a truck and mini bus has claimed a total of 18 lives on the Van Reenen Pass, N3, last night, 6 January. The KZN Department of Transport confirmed that the number of people who have perished has increased from 10 to 18 (13 adults and 5 Children).  MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma said: "We have just received a very disturbing report from a highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate. "Initially, we reported that unfortunately between eight and ten or more have died following a horrific accident involving a truck and a taxi. The number has increased to 18 (13 adults and 5 children)". The accident happened just between 20h30 and 21h00 in Van Reenen along the N3. "We wish to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have requested a comprehensive report from our dedicated RTI team," said Duma. President Ramaphosa declares special official funeral to honour former Minister Sibusiso Bengu

Pretoria - President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that the late Prof Sibusiso Bengu, the democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Education, will be honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 2. Prof Bengu passed away on 30 December 2024 at the age of 90. President Ramaphosa reiterates his deep condolences to the family and friends of Prof Bengu, who also served as South Africa’s ambassador to Germany from 1999 to 2003. Prof Bengu’s Special Official Funeral Category 2 will be held at the University of Zululand in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, 10 January 2025. Proceedings will include ceremonial elements rendered by the South African Police Service. N3 bus crash leaves 17 injured this morning

A bus crash has left 17 casualties injured early this morning, Monday, 6 January. It is understood that the bus rear-ended a haulage truck on the N3 near Tugela Plaza, Ladysmith. Mi7 National Group Medics found that a bus had collided with a container truck, injuring 17 people - five were left with serious injuries and the rest were minor. Multiple service providers worked hand-in-hand to triage and stabilise the patients, some of whom were entrapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated.  Several patients were transported to various hospitals.  "We wish all those injured a successful recovery and urge motorists travelling on the N3 to find alternate routes as recovery operations are underway," Mi7 Medics reported.

Missing Ayabonga Mjilo found murdered, work manager arrested

Durban - Having gone missing for a couple of days, Ayabonga Mjilo, aged 23, was discovered murdered and buried in a shallow grave in eNanda, KwaZulu-Natal.  According to police, the woman was last seen leaving a restaurant in Umhlanga with a male companion in the early hours of 25 December 2024 and a case of kidnapping was opened after she did not return home. Thorough police investigations uncovered the identity of the man who was seen leaving the establishment with the missing woman. During the investigations it was discovered that the man, who was her manager at work, took her to his home at Amaotana area in Inanda. The two reportedly had an altercation and the man allegedly strangled her to death and buried her body in his yard. The suspect (37) was arrested on Saturday morning, 4 January 2025 and appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday, 6 January 2025, facing charges of kidnapping, murder and defeating the ends of justice. Durban water supply interrupted due to heatwave causing high demands

The EThekwini Municipality says it is aware of the interruption of water supply to areas supplied by the Durban Heights, Wiggins, Hazelmere, Amanzimtoti, and Midmar Systems. The systems are under strain due to high consumption, exacerbated by the ongoing heatwave, the Municipality confirmed on Sunday, 5 January. According to the City, the average water consumption in eThekwini remains very high at 298 litres per capita (person) per day (l/c/d) compared to the international average of 173 l/c/d. Residents are requested to use water sparingly to help build sufficient water levels at the critical points in all affected systems. Water tankers have been dispatched to supply affected communities. The Municipality has apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Tornado wreaks havoc in Welkom, Free State

Free State - Welkom in the Free State has plunged into a state of emergency after being hit by a tornado this afternoon, Sunday, 5 January. Although no injuries have been confirmed, various properties in the Matjhabeng Municipality were affected including damages to the Matjhabeng fire station, schools and businesses in the central business district (CBD). The surrounding area remains unstable at the moment. Motorists and residents are urged to remain cautious during this period. This is a developing story.

One person entrapped after two-truck accident in KZN

Pietermaritzburg - A two-truck accident has left multiple injured and one person severely entrapped in Tweedie, outside Pietermaritzburg, today, Sunday, 5 January. Midlands EMS crews were on the scene of this serious motor vehicle accident involving the two trucks. According to the report, the collision has left three people severely injured, with one person trapped under one of the trucks. Midlands EMS Advanced Life Support paramedics and rescue medics are working tirelessly alongside the Fire Department and towing companies to extricate the trapped individual. The N3 southbound was closed earlier to allow emergency service to clear the scene.

Two alleged robbers struck by truck while fleeing on foot

Pietermaritzburg - Two pedestrians were killed after allegedly attempting to rob another pedestrian in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, 5 January. Midlands EMS crews were dispatched to the N3 Northbound near Liberty Mall following reports of a pedestrian accident. Upon arrival, it was established that two individuals, allegedly attempting to rob a pedestrian, fled and ran across the N3, where they were struck by a truck. According to Midlands EMS, both pedestrians sustained fatal injuries and were declared deceased at the scene. Authorities were present to investigate further. This is a developing story.

One dead after bus loses control in Durban

One life was lost when an accident involving a bus took place in Ndwedwe, north of Durban this weekend. On Saturday (4 January)afternoon, IPSS Medical Rescue received calls for assistance from EMRS after a bus travelling on the P100 lost control. Sadly one person lost their life, three people were in a critical condition, four sustained moderate injuries and 50 people sustained minor injuries. Patients were stabilised on scene by Paramedics from various services, and were transported to appropriate facilities for further care. Our condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased.   The cause of the accident will be investigated further by SAPS, but according to eyewitnesses the bus experienced brake failure which led to the accident.
