NSPCA welcomes long-awaited reform for lion captivity breeding ban

CAPE TOWN - The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has  welcomed the announcement by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, on the imminent publication of the Lion Prohibition Notice banning new captive lion breeding facilities.   This long-awaited reform marks a pivotal milestone in dismantling an industry built on systemic cruelty, reflecting years of legal action, public advocacy, and inspections by the NSPCA. The prohibition confirms what the NSPCA has long exposed: the captive lion industry has operated largely unabated for decades, inflicting severe animal welfare violations, damaging South Africa’s conservation reputation, and flouting constitutional obligations to protect sentient beings. While limited to new facilities, this ban sends a clear signal that the commodification of lions for tourism, hunting, and the bone trade is no longer defensible. WATCH: Jumping Castle flies, children injured amid bad windy weather

GAUTENG - An outdoor event almost turned fateful after a jumping castle with children inside flew and tossed children out mid-air. Although fasten and deemed safe, strong wind in Krugersdorp overpowered the fastened jumping castle and took to the sky. The incident follows weather warnings from the South African Weather Service for the weekend advising about strong winds associated with a cold front across the country, except for the Limpopo province. GAUTENG - All grades of fuel are expected to decrease as from Wednesday. The fuel price adjustments were announced by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources on Tuesday. The price adjustments are as follows: Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): 5c decrease. Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): 5c decrease. Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 36c decrease. Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 36c decrease. Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): 56c decrease. Single Maximum National Retail Price for illuminating paraffin: 75c decrease. Mkhwanazi orders disciplinary steps against SAPS member driving an unroadworthy state vehicle

DURBAN - The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered that disciplinary steps be taken against a police officer who was captured on a viral video driving a marked police vehicle without the driver's door. Although the video only went viral on social media on Monday, the video was taken on Sunday, 1 June 2025. The police vehicle was involved in an accident in the Durban North policing precincts where it collided with a minibus taxi. The driver at the time of the accident was a female Warrant Officer who was trapped inside the vehicle, and the door had to be removed to rescue her. Without the door, although in a drivable condition, the vehicle should have been towed back to the police station. Instead of following prescribed procedures, another driver, also a Warrant Officer, drove the vehicle to the station, endangering his life and putting the name and the image of the South African Police Service into disrepute. Overloaded learners spark panic and warning from Joburg Public Safety office

JOHANNESBURG - Parents and guardians have been urged to prioritise the safety of their children when making use of scholar transport services. This after the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) stopped an overloaded scholar transport which hindered the safety of the scholars who were packed on top of each other. "JMPD is conducting strict enforcement at school points. Any driver found overloading children will face immediate fines and possible vehicle impoundment in line with road safety regulations," warned MMC for Public Safety Councillor Dr Mgcini Tshwaku.

Fezile Ngubane, suspect in the Olorato Murder case cleared

DURBAN - An investigation has cleared Fezile Ngubane as a suspect in the Olorato Murder case.  According to police, Ngubane washes cars for a living and was targeted by deceased Philangenkosi Makhanya who used his ID to rica SIM cards with his details and use them in communicating with women.  "He has been released," said Athlenda Mathe, South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson. Makhanya, main suspect in the murder case, was gunned down by police in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. Olorato Mongale, a promising Journalism graduate was laid to rest on Sunday, 1 June.

RIP: Slain Journalism graduate Olorato Mongale laid to rest

FREE STATE - Slain Journalism graduate Olorato Mongale is being laid to rest today, Sunday, 1 June. The funeral is taking place at Bloemfontein City Hall. Her obituary was read as she is laid to rest. Mongale was murdered after going on a new date with man known to her as John. Her body was discovered near Alexandra township, in northern Johannesburg, last Sunday. The main suspect linked to the murder case was shot dead by KwaZulu-Natal police in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, after an apparent exchange of gunfire. This is a developing story.
