GAUTENG - This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July will be celebrated under the theme: “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.”   Nelson Mandela, in addressing the scourge of poverty, suffering and deprivation, said: "It is in your hands to make our world a better one for all, especially the poor, vulnerable and marginalised." PRETORIA - The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, has congratulated 17-year-old Mongiwa Hazel Ntuli on her remarkable achievement of obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Pretoria.

"This milestone comes at a critical time as South Africa works to increase enrolment in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields—areas essential to building an inclusive and resilient economy.

"Hazel’s success stands as a powerful reminder of the potential within our youth and the importance of nurturing talent that will drive the country’s economic development," said Nkabane.

Starting her tertiary studies at the tender age of 14, Hazel embarked on one of the country’s most challenging academic paths, mastering a rigorous actuarial science curriculum renowned for its global standards. Her academic excellence places her among the youngest and most accomplished graduates in the field.

Now 18, Hazel is already pursuing a Master’s degree and has plans to add an MBA to her academic portfolio all while laying the foundation for a promising career. “I’ve always believed in dreaming big,” Hazel said, attributing her resilience and determination to her faith, which she describes as a cornerstone during difficult moments.
