JUST IN: Main suspect in #OloratoMongale murder case shot dead by KZN police

KWAZULU-NATAL - Police have reportedly shot and killed the main suspect in the murder of Olorato Mongale in KwaZulu-Natal. According to SABC news, Philangenkosi Makhanya was found by the police in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. It’s believed he shot at police, who returned fire. Makhanya, together with two other suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Bongani Mthimkhulu, were wanted in connection with Mongale’s murder. Mongale, a journalism graduate, was murdered after going on a new date with man known to her as John. Her body was discovered near Alexandra township, in northern Johannesburg, last Sunday.

TRAGIC: Mini bus taxi and bakkie collision claim more than 10 lives on R40 road

LIMPOPO - The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life following a horrific accident involving a minibus taxi and a bakkie on the R40 road, near Klaserie, Maruleng Municipality, Mopani District. The accident, which occurred early this morning (Saturday, 8 February), resulted in the deaths and serious injuries of those involved. Preliminary reports indicate that 10 passengers from the minibus taxi and three from the bakkie have died. Three critically injured passengers have been transported to Tinswalo Hospital for medical attention. "I am deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic incident," said MEC Mathye. "My heartfelt condolences go out to the families, next of kin, and the broader community who have lost loved ones. I wish a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries." Two soldliers killed after SANDF truck overturned on R31 Road

NORTHERN CAPE - The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating a culpable homicide case following an accident involving a SANDF truck which overturned on the R31 road between Koopmansfontein and Delportshoop. Preliminary information indicates that the accident occurred Friday afternoon, 7 February. The truck was traveling with 19 SANDF members from Lohatla Army base enroute to Kimberley. Two SANDF members, a male and female died on the scene and 17 others were injured and transported to hospital for medical treatment. The identities of the deceased not yet known as their next of kin must be informed. The SANDF truck was traveling in rainy weather conditions from Lohatla to Kimberley when the accident occurred. The cause of the accident forms part of the police investigation.

HAWKS, RTMC arrest five suspects for license dept corruption

  LIMPOPO - Five suspects between the ages of 33 and 63 were arrested in a joint operation by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation and the Road Traffic Management Cooperation (RTMC) at Lephalale Local Municipality on Friday, 7 February.   During 2021, the office of the Serious Corruption Investigation received complaints about officials who were issuing learners and driver's licenses without following proper procedures in return for gratification at Lephalale Test Station.   The investigation - named Operation Combination - was launched, and it was detected that indeed several unlawful activities were done. After completing the investigations, the Hawks referred the matter to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for decision. US President Donald Trump signs Executive Order to cut aid to South Africa

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order to cut financial assistance and humanitarian aid to South Africa. On Friday, 7 February, the White House announced the executive order, citing the disapproval of the South Africa's recently passed Land Expropriation Bill and further punishing the country for its genocide case at the International Court of Justice against Washington’s ally Israel. Head-on collision results in multiple injuries in KZN

MANDENI - A head-on collision has resulted in multiple injuries near Mandeni, north of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, 7 February. According to IPSS Medical Rescue, this head-on collision between a light motor vehicle and a truck, occurred on the N2. It is believed the light motor vehicle lost control, crashing head-on into a truck travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the light motor vehicle sustained moderate injuries and his two passengers sustained minor injuries. The patients were stabilised on the scene by IPSS Medical Rescue before being transported to a nearby facility for further care. The driver and passenger of the truck were not injured in the collision.

Suspected hitmen arrested for the murder of councillor in KZN

MANDENI - Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested two suspected hitmen, few hours after they allegedly shot and killed a 40-year-old ward councillor and injured his 42-year-old sister in Sundumbili on the evening of Tuesday, 4 February 2025. Police officers who are members of Public Order Policing were doing their routine patrols in Sundumbili when they spotted two suspicious men walking along the street. Vigilant police officers stopped and searched the men and the two were found in possession of two firearms whose serial numbers were filed off. The suspects were arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms. Further investigations by the Political Task Team positively linked the two to the murder of the councillor and the attempted murder of his sister. Sutherland High School bullying given attention after Dept intervention

CENTURION - Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has expressed his concern about a recent alleged bullying incident at Sutherland High School in Centurion, which sparked public interest following a viral video recorded by the mother of the alleged victim. According to information at the department’s disposal, the mother of the Grade 10 girl learner who was allegedly bullied visited the school on Wednesday, 5 February 2025, to report that her child was being bullied by a Grade 10 boy learner, seeking to address the matter. However, the school explained that, as per due process, a preliminary investigation must be conducted to verify the allegations before any disciplinary action. Despite bus driver safety concerns, Rea Vaya buses back on road

SOWETO - The City of Johannesburg has assured Rea Vaya passengers and the public that services will resume today, 6 Thursday. "The City gives assurance that Rea Vaya buses will start operating from Thursday 6 February 2025. Safety and security measures are in place for the protection of drivers, buses and passengers. We apologise for the inconvenience," the City notified. Operations were abruptly halted after two bus drivers were shot and killed in Soweto on Tuesday evening, in what is believed to be orchestrated hits.  According to the bus company, the law enforcement plan is in place to ensure safety and security of bus drivers, buses and passengers following the scary tragedies. MMC for Transport in the City of Johannesburg Kenny Kunene, has condemned this brutality.
