CAPE TOWN - The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has  welcomed the announcement by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, on the imminent publication of the Lion Prohibition Notice banning new captive lion breeding facilities.   This long-awaited reform marks a pivotal milestone in dismantling an industry built on systemic cruelty, reflecting years of legal action, public advocacy, and inspections by the NSPCA. The prohibition confirms what the NSPCA has long exposed: the captive lion industry has operated largely unabated for decades, inflicting severe animal welfare violations, damaging South Africa’s conservation reputation, and flouting constitutional obligations to protect sentient beings. Eight church members including toddler killed in bus roll over

STANGER - A total of eight church members have died in a bus accident on the N2 between Mandeni and Stanger yesterday, Sunday, 9 March. It is reported that the bus ferrying church members travelling from Richards Bay to Shakaskraal had a tyre burst resulting in the driver losing control. The bus rolled down and landed on the embankment. Among the fatalities, include six females; one male and one toddler. The Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House will this morning visit the scene of accident and also assess the wreckage. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has conveyed its heart-felt condolences to the affected families. This is a developing story.

Severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours and localised flooding expected on Monday

PRETORIA - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of Yellow Level 2 weather conditions on Monday, 10 March. According to SAWS, severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours resulting in localised flooding, strong and damaging winds, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail is expected over the central parts and escarpment of Mpumalanga, the extreme south-eastern parts of Limpopo as well as the western parts of KwaZulu Natal. JOHANNESBURG - Amapiano’s most beloved musical duo, Murumba Pitch has shocked fans after announcing their split. GOOD NEWS: Eskom suspends loadshedding after recovery of power station

MPUMALANGA - Eskom has announced the suspension of loadshedding today, Sunday, 9 March. This follows the recovery of more than 3 000MW of generation capacity and replenishment of sufficient emergency reserves in the past 44 hours. Eskom has indicated that coal operations at Kusile Power Station are at optimal levels, with all units that were offline as of Friday now back in service. Progress on the recovery of Koeberg Unit 2 is well underway. "Eskom reassures the public that Koeberg Unit 2 remains safe. "Planned maintenance outages aimed at preparing for winter and meeting regulatory and environmental licensing requirements continue.  "The team is working diligently to restore 4 091MW back to service by Monday," the power utility explained.

TRAGIC: Fatal crash involving minibus taxi claims one life, several injured

DURBAN- A devastating crash occurred on the evening of Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the junction of Northcoast Road and Nandi Drive, north of Durban.  Emergency services were quick to respond to the scene, where a fully laden taxi and a bakkie collided, resulting in chaos. The severity of the impact led to some individuals being ejected from the vehicles. KZNVIP Medics, upon assessment, found one female, believed to be in her 40s, severely entrapped in the wreckage of the bakkie. Tragically, she had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The Ethekweni Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extricate her from the wreckage. In addition to the fatality, three other individuals sustained critical injuries, and approximately eighteen others suffered moderate injuries. JMPD officers arrest seven armed robbery suspects in Eldos

ELDORADO PARK - The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Operations officers arrested seven heavily armed suspects in Eldorado Park , Region G, on the evening of 8 March 2025. While conducting routine patrols in Ward 119, officers received information from members of the community regarding a silver Toyota Avanza, involved in armed robberies in the Eldorado Park area. Acting swiftly on this information, officers located the vehicle at the intersection of Golden Highway and Union Avenue, Eldorado Park. "A thorough search of the vehicle revealed 5 unlicensed firearms, 3 live ammunition and 2 knives. Officers also recovered 2 wallets containing bank cards, 3 cellphones (Apple, Samsung, and Huawei), a pair of scissors, a school bag, and a hookah pipe.
