Kidnapped businessman rescued, wanted Mozambican kidnapper fatally wounded

KEMPTON PARK - The South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Kidnapping Task Team has safely reunited an Indian businessman with his family following a shootout with an alleged mastermind behind the businessman’s kidnapping. The businessman was found in Alexandra in a shack shortly after midnight on Thursday, 04 September 2025. His rescue follows a shooting in which the alleged mastermind behind his kidnapping was shot and killed during confrontation with police officers near the R21 in Kempton Park on Wednesday evening. The suspect who goes by the nickname “Dollarman” is a wanted kidnapping kingpin in both SA and in Mozambique. He is on SERNIC which is Mozambique’s wanted persons database where he was a wanted for several kidnapping for ransoms cases. In SA he was also linked to at least five kidnapping for ransom cases as well as other cases of housebreaking, carjacking and possession of unlicensed firearms. President Ramaphosa remembers veteran Journalist Tshidi Madia

PRETORIA -  President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to fallen veteran journalist Matshidiso "Tshidi" Madia. "My thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of journalist, political commentator, radio host and moderator Tshidi Madia who has passed away in the prime of her life. "Tshidi loved our country and this was the backdrop to her tough questions and her hopeful vision of a South Africa that can and should be better," said Ramaphosa. "We shall continue to work for Tshidi’s South Africa with her now silent pen and voice in our memories and hearts. Her passing during Women’s Month reminds us of her stature as a remarkable citizen and thought leader presented to the nation as an outstanding woman," the President added. GRAPHIC: One person has died, vehicles linked to e-hailing services torched at Maponya Mall

SOWETO - One person has been declared dead and two injured after e-hailing vehicles were attacked by unknown suspects at Maponya Mall this evening, 13 August 2025. According to information at hand, an ehailing vehicle was seen stopping at the entrance when about four men approached the driver and shot at him before torching the vehicle.  Another vehicle which was nearby was shot at and the driver managed to flee and his vehicle was also torched.  It was later discovered that the driver and another passerby sustain gun shot wounds and were taken to hospital.  A case of murder, attempted murder with two counts and arson is opened for further investigations.  The SAPS and JMPD are on the scene to monitor the situation which is suspected to be taxi violence related.

Dept of Home Affairs to open case against anarchists in Germiston

GERMISTON - The Department of Home Affairs says it is collating evidence and will open criminal charges against the anarchists who set a block of flats on fire in Germiston, which then spread to the neighbouring Home Affairs office.  'It is nothing less than an attack on our social infrastructure and cannot stand," says the department. The Home Affairs building went up in flames amid violent clashes related to eviction disputes. The unrest has led to the closure of key streets, including President, Queen, and Jack. Residents are demanding to occupy Pharoe Park flats without paying rent, escalating tensions on the ground. This is a developing story.

SAPS offer huge sum for arrest of WANTED POLICE KILLER

JOHANNESURG - The South African Police  Service (SAPS) is offering a cash reward for anyone who has information on Jabulani Thabang Moyo who is wanted in connection with the killing of two police officers in Roodepoort on Friday, 08 August 2025. "We are putting a R150 000 cash reward for anyone who can lead us to where he is. This criminal is very dangerous, do not approach him, he has no regard for life and we are warning anyone that has information to come forward and not approach this killer," said SAPS in a statement. Those who may have information on this case including the whereabouts of Moyo are encouraged to call Warrant Officer Rabosiwana from the Hawks on 0728444442.

Kaizer Chiefs Coach Nabi to miss first game of the season

NATURENA - Kaizer Chiefs has informed its supporters that Coach Nasreddine Nabi will not be traveling with the team to Cape Town for its opening game of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season against Stellenbosch FC this Sunday. A critical accident involving his wife has occurred at his home in Tunisia, prompting the coach to travel this evening to be with her and the family. According to the club, coach Nabi will return to South Africa once the situation has stabilised.  The coach has had discussions with the technical team to prepare for the game. In Coach Nabi’s absence, first assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef and second assistant coach Cedric Kaze will be on bench for the upcoming game.  Kaizer Chiefs has extended its best wishes to Coach Nabi and his family during this challenging time.

Twelve passengers injured in bus-taxi crash

DURBAN - Twelve injured in serious accident involving a bus and a taxi on Sarnia Road, Rossburgh Durban just before 6am on Tuesday morning.   ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived on the scene to find total carnage after a bus and a fully laden taxi had collided. Paramedics quickly set up a triage system and immediately called for more ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics to assist with the multiple casualty scene. A total of Twelve people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe and were stabilized on the scene before been transported to various Durban Hospitals for the further care that they required.  At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.

Joint Operation Leads to Recovery of Stolen Vehicle, Two Arrested

PIETERMARITZBURG - On Saturday afternoon, Mi7 Strategic Threat Response Unit members were asked to provide backup to Cartrack teams who were tracing the location of a bakkie that had been stolen from a Midlands property.  A joint operation was immediately initiated between Mi7, Cartrack, and the police's Flying Squad. All units proceeded to the vehicle's last known coordinates in the Ashdown area. There, the stolen bakkie was spotted with two men inside. The team swooped in on the vehicle - strategically surrounding it - and the duo were apprehended. Both men were linked to the theft of the vehicle, and were placed under arrest by police officers on scene.

Drug trafficker nabbed at OR Tambo Int Airport, cocaine filled bullets valued at R4.2 m seized

KEMPTON PARK - A 25-year-old drug trafficker was arrested on arrival from São Paulo (Brazil) via Doha (Qatar) at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, 29 July 2025. Acting on intelligence, a team comprising Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics Intel Gauteng, ORTIA SAPS Tactical Team, Border Management Authority (BMA), and private security successfully identified and intercepted the Brazilian national shortly after landing. A search of the trafficker's luggage led police to uncover about 10kg of cocaine with an estimate value of R4.2 million. The trafficker was also taken for a medical examination to determine whether cocaine-filled bullets were swallowed. SAPS continues to record commendable successes in dismantling transnational drug syndicates operating between South Africa and other countries. Through targeted intelligence-led operations, more than 25 drug traffickers were arrested since the beginning of the year at this port of entry.
