#BetwayPrem: Mamelodi Sundowns crowned champions

PRETORIA - Mamelodi Sundowns finished their Betway Premiership campaign with a perfect home record, defeating Magesi 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Sunday. The league champions won all fourteen of their league home games this season in the process of bagging their 24th win of their Betway Premiership campaign. The victory means Masandawana have broken the record for the most wins in a 34-game season in a campaign of just 28 games. The record was held by Manning Rangers with 23 wins in the 1996/97 season, and equalled by Kaizer Chiefs in the 1998/99 season and Sundowns in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons.

Manhunt launched after eight people shot and killed in Umlazi

DURBAN - Police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt for an unknown number of suspects who shot and killed eight people at Zama informal settlement at U Section, Umlazi on Friday evening, 16 May 2025. Police responded to reports of multiple murders and upon arrival at the scene, eight people; six men and two women, whose ages range between 22 and 40 years old, were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds. It is reported that the victims were inside the dwelling when an unknown number of suspects entered and opened fire, killing them at the scene. Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects. Police are appealing to anyone who might have information which can assist in the investigation to contact the nearest police station or call the crime stop number, 08600 10111.

Cash Solutions Company Fidelity ADT thanks officers bravery after failed heist

GAUTENG - Cash Solutions Company Fidelity ADT has hailed its officers for bravery after taking down criminals during a recent failed heist. "At the end of the day, life is precious, and we need to always count our blessings. Following a failed CIT heist, which left three criminals dead, our Fidelity officers emerged unharmed after a fierce gun battle," the company said.  "We would like to take a moment of gratitude for their survival in the face of danger and acknowledge their bravery, courage, and unwavering dedication. Our officers are our everyday heroes who put their lives on the line every single day to safeguard our loved ones and communities. We appreciate you, and we are so thankful that you have come out of this unharmed," company added. The incident has now become a subject of investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

President Cyril Ramaphosa embarks on working visit to USA, 19 to 22 May

PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa will embark on a working visit to the United States of America from 19- 22 May 2025. On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, President Ramaphosa will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House, in Washington DC to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of interest. The President's visit to the US provides a platform to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries. Further details of the visit will be communicated at a later stage.

Minister Anroux Marais' conducts a walkabout in Knysna

KNYSNA - The Western Cape Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Ms Anroux Marais, conducted a walkabout in Knysna, accompanied by various key stakeholders. The local delegation included Knysna Executive Mayor Thando Matika, the Director of Community Services Johnny Douglas, representatives from Knysna SAPS led by the Station Commander Colonel Nicholas Warnick, Law Enforcement, the Knysna Community Police Forum, All Sound Security, the Neighbourhood Watch, and councillors: Peter Bester and Sharon Sabbagh.  The purpose of the visit was for the Minister to gain first-hand insight into the safety and security realities facing the Knysna area.  Several hotspots were identified and discussed, forming part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community safety through collaborative action.

Teacher arrested for submitting fraudulent UNISA qualification

CENTURION - A teacher was arrested for submitting Fraudulent UNISA qualification at the South African Council for Teachers (SACE) Headquarters this week. According to SACE, the arrest occurred once again at its Head Office in Centurion (Gauteng), and this time involving a young female teacher who has been teaching with a fake Unisa Qualification and fake SACE letter. The matter was reported to SAPS and SAQA as it involves a qualification. The Council requests all applicants with misrepresented documents to stop submitting them to SACE.

JUST IN: Truck crash and diesel spillage cause total road closure of N1

JOHANNESURG - Following the earlier motor vehicle accident involving two trucks on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmedt that all lanes of the N1 South are closed to traffic. According to JMPD, this closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene and clear the diesel spillage and overturned vehicle. "Three slight injuries have been reported, and one of the trucks has overturned, spilling diesel. Emergency personnel and Law Enforcement are on scene, and initially, three lanes were affected and closed off, causing heavy delays. "All lanes of the N1 South are currently closed before Maraisburg Road. Vehicles are being diverted at Gordon Road. Significant and heavy traffic congestion is being experienced on the N1 South and surrounding areas," said JMPD. Five men to appear in court for public violence following Loftus protest

PRETORIA - The police have arrested five men following a protest at the Loftus stadium in Hatfield, Tshwane district. The suspects will be facing charges which include public violence, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property. On Sunday, 11 May 2025 just after 16:30 during a soccer match halftime, a group of about 150 people started protesting. Members from Public Order Police approached the protesters to try to talk to them but they allegedly turned violent, started hurling objects at the police. The police managed to stabilise the protesters and arrested five men. The police have a responsibility to act when a protest becomes disruptive, interferes with the event or endangers other people as per the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act 2 of 2010. Mother's Day tragedy: Tow truck collision ends nine lives

EMPANGENI - A tow truck rear-ended a bakkie, resulting in nine people perishing in a horrific accident in Empangeni, north of KwaZulu-Natal this morning (Mother's Day). Public Statement by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma reads: On this Mother’s Day, early this morning around 06h47, I received a report from our highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate informing me about a horrific accident that claimed the lives of nine people, mostly mothers. Losing a mother is a deeply painful experience that marks the radical change of the family’s life and involves a wide range of sad emotions. According to a preliminary report, this accident, which happened along the N2 Northbound after Mthunzini Toll Plaza, involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 which was transporting 24 members of the Zion Christian Church.  They were travelling to Dukuduku, Umtubatuba.

Suspect detained for illegally selling Nedbank Cup Final tickets meant for sponsors

DURBAN - One suspect has been detained after he was found selling Nedbank Cup Final 2025 match day tickets before kickoff at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the illegally sold tickets were issued to sponsors. He was also found in possession of wristbands which were meant to be distributed to service providers. The SAPS said the detained suspect will be processed accordingly. This is a developing story.
