NSPCA welcomes long-awaited reform for lion captivity breeding ban

CAPE TOWN - The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has  welcomed the announcement by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, on the imminent publication of the Lion Prohibition Notice banning new captive lion breeding facilities.   This long-awaited reform marks a pivotal milestone in dismantling an industry built on systemic cruelty, reflecting years of legal action, public advocacy, and inspections by the NSPCA. The prohibition confirms what the NSPCA has long exposed: the captive lion industry has operated largely unabated for decades, inflicting severe animal welfare violations, damaging South Africa’s conservation reputation, and flouting constitutional obligations to protect sentient beings. 28-year-old intern employed at Dept of Transport to appear in court for soliciting bribes



POLOKWANE - A 28-year-old male suspect, who is an Intern at the Department of Transport in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, is set to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 03 April 2025, facing charges of corruption following his arrest on 02 April 2025.

On Tuesday, 01 April 2025, the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit in Limpopo received a complaint about an individual allegedly soliciting money from victims by falsely promising them employment as Traffic Officers. The suspect was reportedly demanding gratification of R6 500.00 per person in exchange for securing them a job.

The case was reported to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation, and an enquiry docket was registered on the same day.

A sting operation was activated in the Thohoyandou policing area. During the operation, the suspect arrived at the designated location where he met with the victims and demanded payment. Upon receiving the money, the police team immediately approached and arrested him. An amount of R2 000.00 was recovered from his possession at the time of the arrest. The suspect was then detained at SAPS Thohoyandou.

The case is being investigated by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the DPCI Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Musina.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police Limpopo, Thembi Hadebe has commended the multi-disciplinary teams for acting swiftly to arrest the suspect. “The arrest of this suspect serves as a strong warning that corruption within the ranks of law enforcement will not be tolerated. We commend the detectives for putting a stop on corruption in all its manifestations,” said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

 

The members of the public are urged to report all elements of corruption in their respective spaces to maintain the integrity of government institutions.
