NSPCA welcomes long-awaited reform for lion captivity breeding ban

CAPE TOWN - The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has  welcomed the announcement by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, on the imminent publication of the Lion Prohibition Notice banning new captive lion breeding facilities.   This long-awaited reform marks a pivotal milestone in dismantling an industry built on systemic cruelty, reflecting years of legal action, public advocacy, and inspections by the NSPCA. The prohibition confirms what the NSPCA has long exposed: the captive lion industry has operated largely unabated for decades, inflicting severe animal welfare violations, damaging South Africa’s conservation reputation, and flouting constitutional obligations to protect sentient beings. While limited to new facilities, this ban sends a clear signal that the commodification of lions for tourism, hunting, and the bone trade is no longer defensible. TRAGIC: Gauteng Grade 12 learner dies during cricket match


WEST RAND - Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of a Grade 12 boy learner from Krugersdorp High School following an incident that occurred during a cricket match at Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) Boksburg on Saturday, 1 February 2025.

According to reports, the incident occurred during a First XI cricket match between Krugersdorp High School (KHS) and CBC. While fielding, two KHS players collided as they attempted to intercept a ball struck into the outfield. One of the learners lost consciousness, while the second was experiencing difficulty breathing.

Emergency medical personnel who were on duty at the school immediately attended to the injured learner, who later lost consciousness. He was rushed to Sunward Park Netcare Hospital, but tragically suffered cardiac arrest en route. Sadly, he was certified dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has dispatched its Psycho-Social Support team to provide counselling to learners, educators, and all those impacted by this tragic event. Furthermore, the department will engage both schools to assess safety protocols surrounding school sporting activities.

MEC Chiloane wishes to extend his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Krugersdorp High School, and the entire school sporting community.

“We are devastated by the tragic passing of this young sportsman. Losing a learner in such circumstances is deeply painful, and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire school community. We call for strength and comfort for all those affected during this difficult time,” said MEC Chiloane.
