JUST IN: Truck crash and diesel spillage cause total road closure of N1

JOHANNESURG - Following the earlier motor vehicle accident involving two trucks on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmedt that all lanes of the N1 South are closed to traffic. According to JMPD, this closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene and clear the diesel spillage and overturned vehicle. "Three slight injuries have been reported, and one of the trucks has overturned, spilling diesel. Emergency personnel and Law Enforcement are on scene, and initially, three lanes were affected and closed off, causing heavy delays. "All lanes of the N1 South are currently closed before Maraisburg Road. Vehicles are being diverted at Gordon Road. Significant and heavy traffic congestion is being experienced on the N1 South and surrounding areas," said JMPD. Dumped newborn baby rescued in time from storm water drain



VERULAM - A newborn baby was rescued in time owing to swift reaction of a Biker from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) who was flagged down in the Verulam Central Business District (CBD), north of Durban.

Reaction Officer Chris Pillay was stopped on Wick Street at 18:52 (Sunday, 9 February) by a pedestrian who believed that an animal was stuck in a storm water drain. When the Reaction Officer searched the area he found a black bin bag stuck near the manhole of a storm water drain. A child could be seen hanging at the entrance that led to a fall several meters below. The Officer manage to removed the plastic bin bag, rescued the child and radioed for assistance. 

RUSA Paramedics arrived on scene and removed wet and soiled clothing from the baby. A dry uniform jacket was placed around the infant girl while she was expedited to Osindisweni Government Hospital (OGH).  

A cotton swab was found on the child's arm. Paramedics believe that the she had been recently discharged from a medical facility.
