JUST IN: Truck crash and diesel spillage cause total road closure of N1

JOHANNESURG - Following the earlier motor vehicle accident involving two trucks on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmedt that all lanes of the N1 South are closed to traffic. According to JMPD, this closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene and clear the diesel spillage and overturned vehicle. "Three slight injuries have been reported, and one of the trucks has overturned, spilling diesel. Emergency personnel and Law Enforcement are on scene, and initially, three lanes were affected and closed off, causing heavy delays. "All lanes of the N1 South are currently closed before Maraisburg Road. Vehicles are being diverted at Gordon Road. Significant and heavy traffic congestion is being experienced on the N1 South and surrounding areas," said JMPD. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has released the road accident statistics following the festive season.

This past festive season was marred by horried crashes which many claimed the lives of locals and cross-border travellers.

*KwaZulu-Natal 304 fatalities from 247 fatal crashes

*Gauteng 235 fatalities from 224 fatal crashes

*Eastern Cape 231 fatalities from 168 fatal crashes

*Limpopo 180 fatalities from 140 fatal crashes 9

*Mpumalanga 143 fatalities from 118 fatal crashes

*Western Cape 140 fatalities from 124 fatal crashes

*Free State 106 fatalities from 81 fatal crashes

*Northwest 100 fatalities from 87 fatal crashes

*Northern Cape 63 fatalities from 45 fatal crashes

Motorists are reminded to obey the rules of the road, including adhering to speed limits.
