JOHANNESBURG - Renowned South African actor Presley Oageng Chweneyagae has passed away at the age of 40. Popularly known for his role on Tsotsi, a Oscar winning film and Emmy nominee, reports about Chweneyagae's passing were confirmed this morning. Cobrizi, also character his also popularly known for has began receiving tribute messages as fans reflect on the role his made in shaping the television industry in South Africa. Funeral details are yet to be released by the family or management soon.

EMPD officers face pre-dismissal processes after illegal strike

GERMISTON - The City of Ekurhuleni has commenced disciplinary measures against 389 Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers following their participation in an illegal strike and blockade of critical highways on 19 March 2025. The affected EMPD officers face pre-dismissal processes due to severe misconduct, including the illegal blockade of the R21, N12, N17, and N3 highways.  According to the City, this unlawful action significantly disrupted traffic flow, severely inconvenienced thousands of commuters, and hindered access to the O.R. Tambo International Airport, a designated National Key Point, impacting flight schedules and broader regional connectivity. "As EMPD officers, these individuals are classified under essential services, mandated to uphold public safety and order. Their participation in prohibited strike action constitutes gross misconduct, undermining public trust and violating labour laws as stipulated in the Labour Relations Act," ...

GRAPHIC: Suspect loses leg during Cash-in-transit truck bombing

GAUTENG - A suspect reportedly lost their leg after a botched cash-in-transit heist on the East Rand. It is reported that the suspect bombed himself, while attempting to blast the cash truck in Thokoza Park in the wee hours of Tuesday, 6 May. It's reported that the suspect succumbed to his injuries while his accomplices vanished after the incident. An official statement is yet to be released by the SAPS or Cash Solutions company involved. This is a developing story.

Four arrested in connection with missing journalist and partner

PRETORIA - The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola has welcomed a breakthrough in the case of missing journalist, Aserie Ndlovu and his partner. On Sunday, 04 May 2025, a cross province operation involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga police led by the Deputy National Commissioner of Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya and the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph MKhwanazi led to the questioning and subsequent arrests of these suspects. The first suspect who is arrested, is according to investigations, the last to be in the company of the missing couple. The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be that of the missing journalist. One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized. Inquest docket opened after head-on collision claims 15 lives

EASTERN CAPE - An inquest docket has been opened following the deaths of 15 people in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bakkie, the Eastern Cape Transport Department said on Sunday. “A total of 15 people have died and five others sustained injuries in a head-on collision involving a fully loaded minibus taxi and a bakkie. The accident occurred on the R63 road between Adelaide and Maqoma (Fort Beaufort) at about midnight on Saturday,” said the department in a social media post on Facebook. It is alleged that the white Quantum, travelling from Qonce (King Williams Town) to Cape Town collided head on with Isuzu Double Cab that was travelling from Adelaide to Kwamaqoma. According to the department, the driver of the Isuzu died on the scene and 13 passengers in the Quantum were also declared dead on the scene, including the driver. NPA welcomes conviction in Joshlin Smith disappearance case

WESTERN CAPE - The High Court of South Africa: Western Cape Division today convicted Jacquen Rowhan Appollis, Steveno Dumaizio van Rhyn and Racquel Chantel Smith for Trafficking in Persons for the purpose of exploitation and kidnapping of Joshlin Smith. The Court found that 6-year-old, Joshlin Smith, was sold for slavery or practices similar to slavery, following an agreement reached amongst the accused. The NPA prosecution team was led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in the Western Cape, Adv Zelda Swanepoel and assisted by Senior State Adv Aradhana Heeramun. The two seasoned prosecutors argued that this is a test case of utmost jurisprudential importance; as the case is the first prosecution where the victim, in this case a child, has been sold and has still not been found.
